Cross Cultural Education and Service Program

Location:

Siuna, Nicaragua

Description:

The five CCESP principles:

The CCESP team, comprised of Dartmouth Undergraduates, Graduate Students from the Thayer School of Engineering and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Faculty of the School, is divided into three teams: Clinical, Construction, and Agriculture. Each December, the teams travel for two weeks to the village of Siuna and other more remote regions of Nicaragua.

The clinical team works towards increasing health education by conducting workshops for community members and local health practitioners on topics ranging from nutrition to safe sex. This team also sets up specialty clinics dealing with specific diseases, such as malaria and TB, or with more general health concerns, such as malnutrition and childhood vaccinations

The construction and agriculture teams spend a majority of the time living and working in the rural communities surrounding Siuna. The agriculture team spends the time building communal gardens in order to help alleviate some of the problems caused by malnutrition. Meanwhile, the construction team addresses health issues by building structures that are needed by the community such as medical clinics and composting latrines.
