This program provides infrastructure, guidance and templates for US physicians to participate in an ongoing program of CME in a small English-speaking Caribbean nation. Volunteer medical educators make two week long “Visiting Professor” tours of the country’s five hospitals ten times yearly. The parent organization, a secular, non-profit corporation called Omni Med , has the enthusiastic support of the Prime Minister of Belize and his Ministry of Health and represents an important agent providing continuing medical education for the country’s physicians and other health practitioners. Omni Med volunteer educators receive room and board and in-country transportation. Scheduling, publicity and logistics are provided by a small, enthusiastic in-country staff.
All medical disciplines are welcomed. Credentialing requires about 6 months of advance planning. Experienced Omni Med past participants are available to guide topic choice and other presentation issues.
The Belize program was begun in 1997 and is Omni Med’s oldest. Other programs based on this model are evolving in Guyana, Thailand and Kenya.
