Laura poses here in the favorite position of the group. She is lying in bed sleeping soundly with nothing to distract her, except thoughts on how she will waste away her free day.
After we woke up we headed down to the bus station. On our way to the station, however, we ran across a military band about to perform in the city square of Samos.
Here are two lovely ladies from the group posing on our way to Pythagorio. We decided to spend our free time on the beach in a lovely little town 30 minutes from our hotel.
On our way to the beach we passed several ancient sites which litter the island. Here you can see the remains of a Roman Bath.
Near to the beach is an airport. Several planes flew over head while we lounged about.
The site of the airport were we will catch out 6:30 a.m. plane tomorrow.
The distance between Samos and Turkey at its narrowest point is 400 meters (which is shorter than the Efpalinion tunnel we walked through yesterday). You can see the mountains of Turkey from the beach and the remains of a small castle on the island.
Another picture of Turkey and Neha’s flip flops. While we looked for a good spot on the beach, we came across a little stream that feeds the sea. When we walked across it took Neha’s shoe with it, as well as Katherine’s and my own. Fortunately we recovered all of them before they were emptied into the sea.
Here’s Neha running after her shoe on the rocky sand.
Who might these three beautiful ladies be? Laura, Neha and Katherine, of course.
AHHHHHHH . . . ATTACK OF THE FIFTY FOOT WOMAN . . . AHHHHHHH.
Prof. Rutter meet us on the beach by accident. He spent his free day reading an article for the AJA (American Journal of Archeology). Behind him you can make out the outline of the island of Ikaria.
The lovely Abby dips into the cold sea water of the Mediterranean. Abby and Ben decided to run the 12 kilometers between our hotel and the beach, while everyone else took the bus.
Peter builds a Tholos tomb out of rocks. Notice the lintel block, which in some Tholos tombs could weigh 100 tons.
After we tanned for about an hour we headed into town for some shopping and lunch. Here you can see part of the main street of Pythagorio.
Katherine purchases a little doo-dad from a small shop. The shops were very small, but quite a few had some fabulous items.
A shot of Samos where we are staying.
Everyone seemed to have a really nice time in Samos. We suggest you visit and spend as much time as possible on the beach.
