Final Comments: April 21

The Olympia Museum is amazing, especially because of its gorgeous sculpture. And we mean gorgeous not only in that the sculpture is very realistic and well-made, but because some of the guys are hot. Some of the girls preferred the Classical cool of the Hermes of Praxiteles, while others opted for the Severe stylings of the Young Zeus/Apollo. Either way, between these two young men and the Mausolos in the British Museum, this trip hasn’t been half-bad.

The canopy over the Bassae temple was a source of amusement for the entire group. Abby started humming a circus tune as we approached it, and others were tempted to start juggling rocks. Apparently, the canopy is supposed to be ‘temporary,’ but you have to wonder how temporary they thought it would be when they began pouring the concrete supports. The best part: on a placard inside the canopy explaining its existence, it says “It is probably not a final solution.” Probably? It’s been there for nearly eighteen years now…

And here’s a quote we couldn’t let slip by. Last night, after yesterday’s update was already posted, we all went out for a chicken dinner. Upon learning the wine was on the house, Prof. Rutter exclaimed, “Dionysus just peed on us!”
