After recalling stories that Prof. Christesen had shared with us on Sparta, we were all a bit apprehensive about spending our precious free day in the city, but the day turned out to be better than we had expected. Our only bad encounters occurred yesterday when we arrived. Yesterday evening, Peter attempted to buy a charger and rechargeable batteries at Radio Shack but had to void the transaction when he was charged 90 euros. Later that night, while engaged in a conversation with a Chinese clothing store clerk, Jackie had to think fast on her feet when the owner used the pick-up line “You speak Chinese, and I speak Chinese, so we should be friends. What is your cell phone number?” We had a much better time today though when we explored the city’s sights. We discovered the Panhellenic Paintball Tournament next to a sheep-grazing orange grove behind the bus station. Some of us even managed to enjoy our crepes despite Ben’s reprimands. Unfortunately the group did not muster enough troops to engage in paintball combat, much to Ben’s dismay. It seems that our only other option is to watch the famous American import, “Sex and the City”, with Abby.
